Gabee has designed leather bags in Melbourne since 1949. Over three generations we've learned what separates a bag that lasts from one that doesn't. Use this checklist when you're comparing leather handbags, wherever you shop.

The 7-point quality checklist

  1. Genuine leather, named clearly. A good listing tells you exactly what the bag is made from, for example "full grain cow leather" or "croc-embossed cow leather". Be wary of vague terms like "PU", "vegan leather" or "bonded leather" if you want real leather.
  2. The type of leather suits how you'll use it. Full-grain and natural-grain leathers are hard-wearing and age well. Croc-embossed and pebbled textures hide scuffs. Suede and metallic finishes are beautiful but need more care.
  3. Even, tight stitching. Look for small, regular stitches with no loose threads, especially where straps join the body. Double-stitched edges, like on our Darcy, add strength.
  4. A proper lining. A fully lined interior protects the leather and makes the bag easier to clean. Our Gabee bags use a signature striped cotton lining.
  5. Solid hardware. Zips should run smoothly, and buckles and clasps should feel weighty, not hollow.
  6. Thoughtful organisation. Internal zip pockets, card slots and phone pockets make a bag useful every day. The Ava has seven compartments.
  7. Responsible sourcing. Ask where the leather comes from. We use Leather Working Group (LWG) accredited leathers. Read about our sourcing.

Making it last

Store your bag in its dust bag with air flow, never in plastic. Keep it away from water, oils and long sun exposure, and test any conditioner on a hidden spot first. Our full leather care guide covers each leather type.

Quick answers

What is the difference between full-grain and natural-grain leather?

Full-grain leather keeps the hide's complete outer surface, so it's the strongest and ages with the most character. Natural-grain leather (often called top grain) is lightly finished for a smoother, more even look. Both are genuine leather.

Is croc-embossed leather real crocodile?

No. Croc-embossed leather is cow leather pressed with a crocodile texture. It gives the look without exotic skins, and the texture hides scuffs well.

How long should a good leather bag last?

With care, many years. Store it in a dust bag, keep it away from water, oils and long sun exposure, and condition smooth leather occasionally.

Why do some leather bags have marks or colour variation?

Every hide is unique. Natural marks, veins and slight colour variation are signs of genuine leather, not faults.
